Recent Fiction Finds

Life can get pretty crazy sometimes, am I right? Well, for me, it's been way too long since I had that burning desire to sit down with a good book. Luckily, I'm getting back to that love of reading and have read more in the past few months than I think I have in the past three years combined. Not that I've read a ton, just that it seems that way in comparison to the reading drought of the past few years.

Here's a few that have struck me as interesting reads, that were a breath of fresh air. The underlined titles are links to Barnes and Noble in case you want to pick up a copy for yourself. It's just for convenience, I don't get anything from it...well, except for the joy of sharing a good book recommendation with others.

Skin of the Sea book cover
Skin of the Sea, by Natasha Bowens

This watery masterpiece was a delight to read. The material is heavier in nature as it combines some historical elements (slavery) with the fantastical elements. This is the first book of a series, and I'm excited to read the next one. The writing was refreshing, with unique similes and metaphors, and a poetic quality at the perfect times.

Ultimately, a great read that immediately invites you into a rich world and culture, and the struggles faced by its inhabitants. The part I enjoyed the most was that the book didn't end the way I thought it would have, but not in a bad way. It was nice to have the unexpectedness take me by surprise. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone, so I'll just recommend it to those who like fiction and fantasy. I'm pretty sure I devoured that book in a couple days. Well worth the read!

The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh

Another book that I read in just a few short days' time was The Beautiful, the first book in a series. Yes, I love a good series. Sorry, not sorry. 😋 There is a quality about this book that draws the reader in right from the first paragraph. It's difficult for me to put a finger on exactly what that quality is, but you know it when you read it.

It was different in all ways to what I expected, even after reading the description of the book. Nothing prepared me for exactly how certain situations and premises were handled. I was absorbed by the vibrant life infused into the characters and the environment while reading. Definitely a good weekend read, you might not want to put it down if you start during the week.

I'll hopefully have some comments on a couple other books in the near future as well. My to-read list has been steadily growing, and has long ago outpaced my wallet so I have to supplement when I can with our awesome local library. If you needed an excuse this Summer to stay inside where it's cool and avoid the current ridiculous heatwave covering most of the country, then your library or local bookstore has got you covered.

If you want to overburden my to-read list with some recommendations, please leave a comment with the book(s) you think should be on my list!
